SPECIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Engaged "at-risk" students in the learning process by using a literature-based approach to teaching.
  • Fostered a sense of classroom community by encouraging students to interact in positive and meaningful ways.
  • Empowered learners by providing numerous opportunities for collaborative research projects on high interest topics.
  • Encouraged students to play active roles and to think democratically by electing class officers to oversee various
    class activities.
  • Facilitated learning in all subject areas of the curriculum, including technology.
  • Gently led children using positive discipline and decreased negative classroom behaviors by attempting to bridge
    the gap between curriculum and the students' real lives.
  • Created individual spelling lists for students by focusing on words they misspelled in their own writing in addition
    to whole class phonetic-based instruction.
  • Utilized the reading workshop approach and encouraged children to keep daily journals.  Taught language arts
    skills in the context of real reading and real writing rather than in isolation.
  • Conducted "unit studies" with the children that included hands-on activities that were student-centered and
    resulted in a high level of student engagement.  Example: Students studied Medieval Times and then planned a
    Medieval Feast complete with Powerpoint presentations and tasty food as a culminating activity.  Parents and
    siblings were invited to attend.
